Italy
Italy produces more wine than any other country on earth, and it isn't particularly close. Over seven billion bottles a year, grown across twenty regions that span alpine valleys, volcanic islands, and everything in between. Italy also has one of the highest concentrations of organic and biodynamic vineyards in Europe, which is what drew us there in the first place. Many of these producers never pursued the expensive US certifications. They farm organically because their families have farmed that way for generations, long before anyone thought to put a label on it.
What makes Italian organic wine distinctive is the sheer variety. No other country plants as many grape varieties or maintains as many distinct regional winemaking traditions. A Nebbiolo from the fog-wrapped hills of Piedmont has almost nothing in common with a Nero d'Avola from sun-baked Sicily, and both are worlds apart from a Garganega grown on volcanic soil in the Veneto. This diversity means you can drink Italian wine every night for a year and never get bored, and it means organic producers here have centuries of local knowledge to draw on rather than starting from scratch.
We carry many wines from across the Italian peninsula. In Piedmont, cool fog and limestone-rich hillsides produce some of the most expressive reds anywhere: Barolo, Barbera, Langhe Nebbiolo. Tuscany's rocky, well-drained slopes are where Sangiovese thrives, giving wines like Chianti Classico and Brunello their firm structure and earthy character. The Veneto stretches from the volcanic hillsides that give Soave its mineral edge, to the steep terraces of Valdobbiadene where the grapes for our Prosecco are still picked by hand. Friuli's cool alpine influence preserves bright acidity in whites like Pinot Grigio and Friulano. And in Campania, ancient volcanic soils give Aglianico a depth and intensity that surprises people who haven't explored southern Italy yet.
Every producer has been vetted by our sommelier, who has scored over 10,000 wines and visited many of these estates personally. If it's on this page, we'd drink it at our own table.
