I consider the Terlano winery among the three best producers of white wines in Italy, and it has been a social cooperative of growers since 1893. The farmers devote all their energy to perfectly growing the grapes in a sustainable way, leaving the agronomic guidance and wine production and sales to the management of the group.
Winkl is a single cru (hill) of Sauvignon Blanc. At the nose, the flower note of edelberry is immediate, with cedar and magnolia, high mountain herbs and minerality. The iron-layered soil expresses itself more at the palate, with a great integration of sapidity and fruit.
Grape: Sauvignon Blanc
Pairing: I like it with eggs prepared with parmigiano and asparagus, or salmon with butter and dill, or any seafood pasta.
Appellation: Alto Adige Terlano DOC, Italy
Terlano is a tiny village in Alto Adige, the northeastern part of Italy at the Austrian border. Its rocky soil is made of porphyry and quartz, a very special blend that leads to marvelous white wines. This appellation is limited to white wine based on Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc or, in smaller percentages, Pinot Bianco.
