I like the 2016 Pontet Canet very much. I had the chance to taste a vertical of seven vintages of this landmark biodynamic producer of Pauillac, and while Bordeaux are well known for aging well, the 2016 vintage outperformed the older vintages in harmony, elegance and precision. An excellent expression of Bordeaux, with subtle scents of licorice and blackcurrants, figs and mushrooms, rosemary and chocolate, with a wet clay note followed by green and black pepper and sweet spices. At the palate it is intense, persistent and long, bold but never overwhelming, with integrated elegant tannins and a smooth texture till the end.
Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc
Pairing: Lamb with its jus, a T-bone steak, aged dry cheeses.
