Fattoria Lavacchio

Fattoria Lavacchio is a family estate in the Chianti Rufina hills north of Florence, run by winemaker Faye Lottero. The property has been organic since its founding in 1995. Twenty hectares of vineyard at elevation, in soil rich with marl, producing wines that are smoother and more refined than most Chianti. Lavacchio was the first producer to earn USDA organic certification for a Chianti DOCG.

Ludiè is their flagship: a single-vineyard Sangiovese from vines planted in 1963 on the slope called "La vecchia in salita." It spends 24 months in French oak barriques and at least 18 months in bottle before release. A wine built for aging and serious meals.

Dark ruby red. The nose is layered with dark cherry syrup, chocolate, spice and moist chewing tobacco. On the palate it spreads thickly and smoothly, with dark extraction and rich plushness balanced by the bright acidity that defines the Rufina zone. A special occasion wine for roasted beef, lamb shanks, venison, or pasta with porcini.

Brunello’s younger sibling. Same Sangiovese, same Montalcino terroir, shorter aging, half the price. A good weeknight bottle for palates that run toward the structured end.

Querciabella Mongrana 2020 ($29.90)
A Sangiovese-Merlot-Cabernet blend from one of Italy’s most respected biodynamic estates. Softer and more fruit-forward than Ludiè, but made with the same uncompromising organic standards.
