If you do not know Chateau L’Evangile but you are a connoisseur of the great Bordeaux right bank, it will suffice to know that its vineyards are in Pomerol, immediately south of Chateau Petrus and immediately north of Cheval Blanc in Saint Emilion. It is a must-try, also because since 1990 the property is owned and managed by Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owner of Chateau Lafitte in the left bank appellation of Pauillac AOC.
Blason L’Evangile is way less expensive than Chateau L’Evangile, the main wine of the Chateau, but it’s not a B wine at all. It is dense and well balanced, powerful enough but not overwhelming, with scents of dark berries, vanilla, licorice and plums. In the mouth it is persistent, smooth but also sapid, with elegant tannins. I would drink it in the next year or so, without ageing it too much.
Grape: Merlot, Cabernet Franc
Pairing: I like it with meatballs and mashed potatoes, or steak frites.
