Ludié is a Chianti Rufina DOCG. The appellation is well known for the Marchesi Frescobaldi’s historical and very large estate – but while Frescobaldi is an authority in Chianti Rufina, he is not the only producer.
With much less land but extraordinary dedication to organic farming, Fattoria Lavacchio managed to make great organic Chianti in this very specific terroir north of Florence.
Ludié is playing the game of “high quality Sangiovese in purity” – meaning using the grape on its own, unlike traditionally done in Chianti, –like Flaccianello from Fontodi (which is also organic and featured in this store).
At the nose it is complex, with dark berries and morello cherries jam, chocolate, bay leaves and eucalyptus. Plus carnations and vanilla, and a bitter note of artichokes. At the palate it is powerful yet fresh, elegant and with tannins not overwhelming at all. It is a special occasion wine to be enjoyed with an important meal, and given the prestigious bottle designed with matte glass and velvet label, it is also a perfect gift.
Grape: Sangiovese
Pairing: Roasted beef, lamb shanks, or venison and polenta. Pasta with porcini mushrooms.
Appellation: Chianti Rufina DOCG, Italy
The Rufina DOCG sub-zone is at the northernmost part of the denomination Chianti DOCG, mainly north-east of Florence, close to Montefiesole. The soil and the micro-climate make this Chianti particularly smooth and elegant.
