Grattamacco is the only organic super-Tuscan among the Ivy League of the Bolgheri appellation (which also includes Sassicaia, Guado al Tasso, Ornellaia and Castello di Bolgheri.)
I had the pleasure of tasting the five of them together, and Grattamacco is surely among the top two overall, but it’s the best for quality compared to price.
At the nose, the attack is black and blue berries followed by herbs and spices, then tobacco and balsamic notes. At the palate it is powerful and smooth, tannins are very well integrated. It is elegantly harmonious with a long, complex finish.
Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese
Pairing: I tasted it with steak tartare and it was very pleasant, but it is also great with a rich pasta like mushroom sauce or beef ragù. Excellent with hare, venison, and T-bone steak with roasted potatoes.
